Ciao a tutti!
Bruschetta (pronounced broo-sketta) is a great authentic Italian appetizer that can be found just about anywhere in Italy, although the region of Lazio, home to Rome, is very popular for this appetizer.
Bruschetta is super easy to make at home. In fact, it requires very few ingredients, is quick to prepare and is usually always vegan*!
*To be sure of 100% vegan Bruschetta you will need to check the bread ingredients. Some “homemade” breads or commercial bread may contain milk, butter, lard or animal byproducts.
The traditional recipe callS for:
- bread
- diced tomatoes
- olive oil
- salt
for the base ingredients.
Other additions sometimes used are:
- garlic
- onions
- black pepper
- basil
- oregano
The bread can be toasted or not toasted however when toasted, will absorb the olive oil nicely and have a nice crunch to it. Add the tomatoes, salt and basil right away so the tomatoes can warm up a bit.
Also, if using onions it should be noted that white, yellow or red onions will all offer a different taste for the Bruschetta. Red onions are strong, but work best when raw. Yellow onions are best for cooking and may be sauteed a couple seconds before adding to the tomatoes. White onions are strong and have a very distinct taste.
Then enjoy a nice authentic Italian appetizer!
Buon Appetito!
